THE BEST TO COME OUT OF THE DESIGN WORLD IN 2016:
2016 was pretty evolutionary when it comes to the design world. The year may have not gone according to everyone’s plan…but there were still some amazing things that have not only advanced technology and society but the way we see design and how we use design. And design, is what we do!
As we predicted at the end of 2015, a lot of the trends from our ‘The Best Design Trends of 2015 And What’s Coming In 2016’ blog post were spot on. 2016 was a big year for innovative logos. Logos that were not only influenced by a company’s message and products, but were bigger, bolder and took some exciting risks in how they incorporated elements like typography, geometry and negative space.
With more technology advancement means even more exciting and forward thinking digital design. As we already know there are no two-ways about it, we are in a digital era where if you’re not online you’re not relevant. The only way to reach your market is to go where your market is, and your market is online. From app design to web design, last year we saw an ever changing platform in just how to get in touch with your audience in exciting and futuristic ways. From the layout of a web page to splash imagery, to interactive menu’s to multifaceted sites, there was no longer such a thing as a ‘boring website’. With the average person spending 40 hours a week consuming digital media from desktop to their phone’s, this also only increased the demand for innovative and responsive web design.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM 2017:
2017 is going to be a truly one-of-a-kind, game changing year for the way we market ourselves, how we interact with our clients, and the values we need to set forth through design. With technology advancing faster than we ever thought possible, every week there is a new and improved product making our lives easier, and information coming at as at an expediential rate, society as a whole is choosing to slow things down. Get back to basics and what got us into business in the first place – personal relationships and interaction with companies and brands rather than dismissive one-off transactions. Gone are the days where consumers thoughtlessly purchase from ‘oh what’s his face’ but instead know who they are buying from and why they are buying from them. It’s all about the people behind the product.
People over Product: Entering a new era where we have anything and everything for every need and want, it’s hard to know which brand to go to over another. Having a variety of suppliers who can give you what you want when it comes to product, consumers now care more about people. Who will give me the best service? Who goes beyond my expectations? And most importantly, which brand’s ethos can I get behind? Consumers are choosing to invest more in the brands that they can align themselves with either morally, through ideals, or an overall outlook on the world. We are entering an age when messaging is no longer about the product specifications but what you can provide your customers beyond the tangibility. What does your company stand for? What are your ideals? What makes your company, a company that people will want to get behind. When looking to your graphic design this year, these are the key things that are going to stand out against your in your business card, flyers, brochures, your website and more.
Organic Design: Messaging is key when getting back to the basics of selling, and so is relatable and relevant design. Design in print and digital is becoming more organic and natural and to the point. Shooting from the hip with who your company is, what does your company do and most importantly, why? Your product may be better and more advanced, but your customers aren’t buying your product, they are buying you and want to know why. And in order to make this clear, elegant, natural and contemporary design is the only way to do this.
Social Media Attention: As previously mentioned the average person spends more than 40 hours a week consuming digital data, and the majority of that data comes from social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – it’s the first thing we check when we get up and the last thing we look at before we go to sleep. We’ve learnt over the years no company can compete without being in the game, and the game exists through social media. It’s a key and necessary part of your marketing when reaching any and all clients. But with so much digital data being consumed (same amount as a full time job) how can you get your authentic messaging out there? By paying attention to the overall look and aesthetic of your posts. A quick status update will no longer make the grade, but only visually stunning and enticing design will do.
Video/Interactive Web Design: We know we’ve mentioned it a lot, but that’s only because it is so important – online interaction with clients is key. Key! We’ve seen so much advancement last year when it came to web design and we’ve seen even more exciting things coming out this year. You’ve got the basics, beautiful layout, easy navigation, striking hero imagery, what’s left? Video and interaction of course. Time to give your clients a reason to hang around your website, to keep coming back and use it as a useful and reliable tool when you’re not around. Add videos to your website (youtube integration, iPhone clips, a promo video, etc.) so your current and potential clients can get a better feel for who your company is. Better yet, why not introduce your staff so your clients feel like they already have a relationship with them before they even step foot through the door. Add interactive elements (gifs) to the pre-existing visuals on your site, this not only adds a little bit of something extra but can assist in your overall stats and analytics.
Small changes, but key changes are happening in 2017. Back to basic and clear messaging, choosing relationships over product, and finding new ways to interact with your clients on a deeper level. Be yourself, sell yourself and you can’t loose. It also doesn’t hurt to have your local and friendly creative design studio on your side!
